Sugar crisis: CCP presents report to SC

ISLAMABAD : The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) discredited the government intervention over sugar issue, as according to the Commission, it will spoil the market system and the corruption is feared to be spawned by it.

The report, the CCP presented to the Supreme Court (SC), said the people related with the sugar business told the Commission that they have to pay various government departments while taking sugar cane from the field to the sugar mill.

According to the investigation, the average per kilo cost along with the taxes is Rs36.94 in Punjab, Rs33.47 in Sindh and Rs41.22 is the per kilo cost incurred on sugar production in the NWFP.

The CCP said in its report that the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) could not maintain the target regarding the stocks, which spurred the sugar shortage in the market.
